Hats off to Novak - balance in life is key

Novak Djokovic is to be admired for his honesty.

There has been huge interest and speculation surrounding his lack of form over the past 4 months. In that time he lost his No. 1 ranking to Sir Andy (who I believe deserved it and would have secured it anyway), lost in the 2nd round of the Australian Open and was bundled out in the quarter-finals of the Mexican Open in straight sets by Australian Nick Kyrgios (who by all accounts played a sensational match, perhaps the best of his fledgling career)

That he has come out today and said that he still loves the game that made him one of the most recognisable sportspeople on the planet, and earned him great wealth but, that as a husband and father, it is no longer his No. 1 priority takes great courage.

I have always admired him for his ruthless sense of purpose. A determination that frustrated Andy Murray for many years as he strove to be the best himself. As Andy Murray has blossomed in marriage to achieve the heights he so desperately sought so Novak Djokovic now strives for balance - the balance between achievement in a sport he loves and wishes to excel at even now, his ability to be the best father he can be to his son Stefan and husband to his wife, Jelena.

That pursuit of balance is something which a good many of us could learn to do better. All too often our relentless pursuit of an ideal is misplaced and comes at great expense, not necessarily to ourselves, but to those around us.

Living for, or through, others expectations is fraught with danger. The world is full of disillusionment as a result. A good deal of the anxiety and stress that befalls many, Perhaps this over simplifies the nature of anxiety and stress, but I believe, much of it results from striking the incorrect balance in life.

I hope Novak's stance is widely publicised and used to highlight to others that balance is a question of personal choice and one we should give much more careful consideration to.
