The emotions I felt this afternoon when I heard that Comrade R.G. Mugabe had finally capitulated to pressure and resigned were extraordinary. A mixture of pride and hope, jubilation and joy for the country that was my place of birth.
Our family left Rhodesia in 1967 shortly after Ian Smith declared UDI - my very insightful parents convinced that the writing was on the wall for the wonderful country that Rhodesia was (notwithstanding the apartheid that existed.)
The next 4 decades have seen Rhodesia cease to exist and Zimbabwe born and a hero of the struggle elected as the country's first president.
Unfortunately Mugabe's premiership has resulted in a country that finds itself almost on its knees - down but not out.
Events of the last 7 days have demonstrated what an incredible race the Zimbabweans are - educated, peaceful, passionate, respectful and now..........free! They have displayed an understanding of the notion of law, a real respect for those who deserve it, a willingness to play the long game and importantly a grasp of how to achieve the end objective in a peaceful and harmonious manner.
It can only be hoped that Mugabe's resignation will lead to the free and fair elections so many want. It is vital that whoever assumes the Presidency allows such a richly resourceful country to find its feet and to once again prosper - to assume its mantle as the Bread Basket of Africa it once was.
In the early 60's Rhodesia was considered by many to be the most self sufficient country on Earth. I for one hope that it once again strives to be so for the benefit of its long suffering people and as a beacon for a number of other African countries who find themselves in a similar situation.
God Bless Zimbabwe Mwari Akomborere Zimbabwe
P.S. On an otherwise dull day the author has exercised creative license by inserting a photo taken recently on a bright and cheerful day to reflect the joy he felt on hearing the news this afternoon :)
